Things I Love #2: Books, Chapstick, & Pretty Things

by Jessica on February 8, 2010

Last week I kicked off the month of love sharing the things closest that I love. This week I’m getting a little frivolous and adding pictures. Oh, pictures how I love thee!

#1 – Books.

Things I Love

If you know me, you know I love books. Always have, always will. I was the kid who got the flashlight taken away for reading in bed after lights out and then I’d go sit by the window to read by the moonlight. My mom was asked once for ideas to get a teenager gifts for Christmas (this was when I was in high school) and she told them all I wanted was books.

You’ll find books in various places and piles throughout our house. This isn’t even the lot of them. I have books at my parent’s and grandparent’s house. Where’d our collection come from? Thrift stores, gifts, PaperBack Swap, school, and library sales. Joe was a history major (and now in seminary) and I was an English/Education major. Books are a requirement.

I even had a book blog for awhile. The name? Mountains of Books. You know, from Beauty and the Beast. It’s from the description of the castle library, “Mountains of books, gads of books, cascades of books–more books than you can read in a lifetime!”

#2 – Chapstick.

It’s always with me. Always. If it’s not then I’m frantically looking for it and going through withdrawals. I think my dependency started sometime in high school.

These days I’m rocking the Burt’s Bees, but traditionally I’m a Chapstick kind of gal with a bit of Mary Kay Satin Lips for good measure.

#3 – Brooches

Or pins, if that’s what you prefer to call them. I love vintage things. Simple, beautiful…an understated elegance. I don’t wear them as often as I use to, but I still collect them.

#4 – Pearls.

I love pearls. They’re beautiful. And I wear them almost daily. I have a pair of fresh water pearl studs I wear that my dad got on a trip to Australia, a fake pearl necklace (who wants the real thing broken amid hugs and snuggles), and a real pearl necklace (see picture) that Joe gave me as a wedding present.

#5 – Old books.

Things I Love2

They’re beautiful, alluring. Why? There’s something about the yellowed pages, tiny type, and vignettes. I collect them. So if you have any old books you want to get rid of go ahead and pass them my way. :) Oh, and the ultimate find would be anything Jane Austen.

Alright, so what about your favorite things?

I agree with you on the Burt’s Bees chapstick!! I find myself crying out, “I need my chapstick!” all the time, to which my husband snickers, inevitably recalling the Napoleon Dynamite moment which haunts my innocent need for chapstick. :)
