{day 17} Gripping the Millstone

by Jessica on October 17, 2011

in 31 Days to Significance

We’ve established that while we may not be able to control the way insignificance is built in our lives, we do have control over how we respond.

But so often, instead of reaching for the hand of God to speak His truth over us and soothe our fears and insecurities, we turn to our own devices.

We may grab on tight to anger as our retribution. We replay those words of insignificance over and over allowing the resentment to build against their owner.

Instead of coming to the Word and identifying the lies, we lace a rope through the millstone and heave it onto our backs.

We carry anger and resentment, where we should hold life and peace.

We parade our insignificance as a badge of fury, ready to claw and berate the next person who talks down to us. Perhaps we’re not so bold and we let the tension build and fester.

We become bitter. We become hardened.

We’ve chosen to turn our backs on grace when we keep a tally of wrongs. We deny the life of the Spirit when we take our insignificance and dress in bitterness and resentment.

Our freedom will only come, when we let go of the bonds that bind to forgive, release, and see ourselves through the eyes of God.

We have not been made insignificant in Christ. We have been made into a sweet aroma, not a bitter fruit. We have been washed in mercy to extend mercy, not withhold grace.

Over the next few days in 31 Days of Significance, we’ll continue to look at the different attitudes of insignificance. Not everyone who struggles with insignificance will identify with every attitude, but I do believe they overlap and we may experience different variations of each attitude.

Have you experienced anger, resentment, or bitterness in your life because of insignificance?

Other attitudes of insignificance:

{day 18} When Self Reigns – Selfishness & Self-promotion

{day 19} When the Mirror Spits Back – Insecurity

{day 20} Dressed in Mourning – Despair & Hopelessness

I needed to read this post this morning. Thank you Jess for letting Father use your words. I am one who struggles with this on a regular basis unfortunately. Your series has been such an encouragement!

This:

Our freedom will only come, when we let go of the bonds that bind to forgive, release, and see ourselves through the eyes of God.
