Grace Came Down

by Jessica on December 24, 2010

in Christmas

We ridicule, we judge, we covet. We slay with our words, with our thoughts, with our actions. We hold onto attitudes of self-righteousness, injustice, and pride. We look inward instead of outward, we hoard instead of give, we curse instead of bless.

And yet, at Christmas we worship the God-Man.

The God-Man who set aside his kingly robes and came in the form of a man, not just a man…a helpless baby.

The God-Man who “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with god a thing to be grasped” (Php. 2:6).

The God-Man who came as a servant.

The God-Man who humbled himself to the point of death on the cross.

And yet…we, all too often, hold ourselves up.

We, those we have been drowned in the love of grace, forget it. Instead of being humbled that the God-Man saw us in our pitiful position, reached to save us from our own oblivious self-righteousness, we’ve become comfortable. We feel safe in our justification–and while we should, we forget grace. We forget to extend it, breathe it, live it.

Grace came down.

It came to cover our sins, our unrighteousness, our evil, our self-importance, our guilt, our pride.

Grace came to free us.

We worship this humble Grace-Giver. We sing songs of praise. We gather to celebrate his first coming and anticipate his second.

But do we forget the most central thing of all?

The gift of grace.

Do we give it? Or do we hoard it?

Do we embrace grace for ourselves, but neglect to see how the same God who showered us wants to pour grace on the sinner next to us? Do we forget that the good in us is only because of the grace of God?

Or do we presume it is some righteousness of our own?

This Christmas–this year, this life–let’s purpose to not only live in the grace God has given to us, but remember to extend grace to all we see, all we meet, all we hear.

If we keep grace to ourselves we kill it.* If we keep it to ourselves, we don’t really know it. If we keep it to ourselves, we have no clue what we’ve been saved from.

Let us follow the God-Man and live in humble estate, remembering that love covers a multitude of sins and no one is beyond the reach of grace.

To Shepherds He Came

by Jessica on December 21, 2010

in Christmas

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,

All seated on the ground,

The angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around,

And glory shone around.

Isn’t it interesting that God sent the angels to proclaim the birth of the newborn King to lonely shepherds on a hillside?

In a city filled to the brim with people, God choose to reveal His plan to lowly shepherds. Not kings, not the wealthy, not the influential, not the priests,

but shepherds.

“Fear not!” said he; for mighty dread

had seized their troubled mind,

“Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind.

To you and all mankind.”

Sheep herders.

Was it the heart of God that choose them? His own shepherd heart knowing that they care for their sheep, protecting them, staying with them when the hired hands flee (Jn. 10:13).

Was it that these men, dirty from resting on the ground, are the trusted voice the sheep would follow?

Did God feel a certain kinship?

“To you, in David’s town this day, is born of David’s line,

The Savior who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign:

And this shall be the sign.”

He called out to the shepherds to come and meet their Shepherd.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11

Were these men “good shepherds”? Did they know the hardship and sacrifice it takes to lead a dumb flock?

“The heav’nly Babe you there shall find,

To human view displayed,

All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, and in a manger laid;

And in a manger laid.”

Did He proclaim to them because they would understand when others would not?

Certainly with the multitude of angels (Lk. 2:13) and the glory of the Lord shining around them (Lk. 2:9), they knew this Christ baby was true.

“All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace:

Good will henceforth from heav’n to men,

Begin and never cease, begin and never cease.”

They would marvel while others slept.

The Rescuer is Coming

by Jessica on December 19, 2010

in Living Intentionally

Sitting here, covered in grace

Embracing the peace that comes with submission

Looking forward to the coming days,

the smiles, laughter, and time spent in the comfort of family

to friends gathering, hearts and lives connected;

And waiting in anticipation of that celebration,

which seems all at once magical and impossibly holy.

We celebrate,

We praise,

We gather, and

look.

Hopefully, expectantly, for the King–no longer new born, but coming.

Yes–-He is coming in the darkest night

to light the shadows and bring us home.

The Rescuer is coming.

184. Five years since that first non-date date.

185. A peppermint chocolate milkshake. Yum. :)

186. All the baby stuff bought (We’re almost ready!)

187. The joy and privilege to train a child

188. A phone call from a friend

189. Change…conviction…redirection

190. The faces of a little boy learning different emotions.

191. Being together as a family

192. A Sunday afternoon nap

193. The mystery of a King coming in such lowly estate.
