Peace, peace

“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 1:76-79

This week as I’m putting the finishing touches on Christmas gifts, preparing packages to be mailed, making dinner plans, and planning on packing for a trip to the hospital to meet a new little someone one word I’m clinging to is peace.

I love this season, but at the same time I find myself mumbling about how I wish there wasn’t so much to do, that presents weren’t part of the equation, that there weren’t meals to be done and people to be pleased, and perhaps even that if this baby were already here things would be easier.

Somehow in my plans to avoid the stereotypical, hectic American celebration of Christmas, I jumped in with both feet.

My heart frets.

My mind makes lists that won’t fit with the days.

I worry that people won’t like handmade gifts, that someone will be forgotten.

I think about the money it takes to fulfill the requirements of the holiday and I cringe. Why can’t things be free?

How having a holiday and a baby collide isn’t the best planning.

Some moments I want to run away from it all, close the door on the celebrations, and return in the new year. I don’t want to be a Grinch, but when all the other “stuff” turns the longing for the promised hope into a longing to just escape…where’s the fun in that?

This morning as I sat in the quiet He spoke words of peace into my chaotic heart.

Trust, he says.

Don’t fret, he reminds me.

You don’t live for them, he whispers. You don’t live for the approval of man.

But isn’t it so easy to?

Trust me. Walk in my peace.

This week the goal is peace, to rest and trust, in Him who is Peace.

What about you? What struggles are you facing this season?

Promises Hanging

by Jessica on December 8, 2010

in Celebrations,Christmas

Each night we gather around the table and light a candle. A single flame joined by another.

We ask the little man, “Who does the light remind us of?”

“Jesus!” he replies.

“And what does Jesus bring?”

“Jesus brings light into the world!”

And then we read stories from the past, each connected by words leading to fulfillment.

As we finished tonight’s story about when God gave the people the 10 Commandments (or decalogue…which happens to be easier for a certain 2-year-old to say), we blow out the candles.

And in the darkness, the little one who’s name means “God will add” runs to the garland strung with lights, points up and says, “Promises!”

How true! I think of how each one of those ornaments hanging is a promise.

A promise that Jesus will win, crushing the serpent’s head.

A promise that the earth will never be covered in water again.

A promise of a great nation out of the barrenness of a woman.

A promise of blessing and protection.

A promise for goodness even when ill is meant.

We’re counting down the days until Christ’s birthday in His promises to us. And in this season of longing we have one more promise to cling to,

the darkness that we are extinguishing…the darkness that He extinguishes with his light is a gentle reminder that He is coming again and His justice, His peace, His rule will prevail.

Amen.

So be it.

hope calling out to Hope

by Jessica on November 28, 2010

in Celebrations

It’s a song sung in dark shadows.

It’s the sound of hope calling out to Hope.

It’s a holy mourning, a cry for mercy, for justice…for the King of the captives to bring home His chosen people.

O come, O come Emmanuel

And ransom captive Israel

That mourns in lonely exile here

Until the Son of God appears

We’ve entered into the season of longing--a hopeful, promised longing. It’s a cry of the chosen ones of God.

We rejoice because we know deliverance is coming, it has come, and it will come again.

Advent is the season of longing culminating in the celebration of a homecoming that has not yet been.

I love that I get to tell my son we’re celebrating Advent. I love that I get to tell his precious little face that at Christmas we celebrate because Jesus came to pay the price for our sins and at Advent we remember that he’s coming again to bring us home. Bring us home.

There is a promised hope, a peace that surpasses all understanding.

There will come a day when the saints will be delivered–those no longer captives, but sojourners, and carried into the throne room of God.

Until then we pray, we ponder, we set our hearts on things unseen…we hope.

And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Romans 5:5
