A Focused Pursuit

by Jessica on January 4, 2011

in Living Intentionally

Last week I shared how 2011 will be the year of pursuit–as, hopefully, will be the years to follow.

To live a life in pursuit of something meaningful, apart from myself, and eternal.

To live without regrets.

Unwrapping each day as a gift and not taking advantage of the empty calendar before me.

It’s helpful for me to break those things down. It’s great to have ideas, but if they stay as just ideas with vague direction and immeasurable goals, then in reality they do very little.

I’m focusing my pursuit. Breaking each goal down and listing what I hope to attain in each.

To be passionate about God, His glory, His mission, and His people. By,

  • studying the Bible
  • loving God deeply
  • spreading His love and grace confidently and with great conviction

To be purposeful in my pursuit of Him, in the resources and responsibilities He’s given me. By,

  • taking a weekly and monthly spiritual inventory (more on this tomorrow)
  • spending my money and resources as if they were not my own
  • living simply and being content with what I have
  • being intentional in my role as wife and mom

To be authentic in my walk with Him, joining with my husband, and walking in community with other believers. By,

  • being in an accountability relationship
  • getting involved at church and pursuing relationships
  • pursuing freedom and being real about sin in my life

As I move through this next month, I’ll be setting aside little bits of time here and there to break these down even further. To not just have a what, but a howa plan.

What about you? What are your goals for the new year? How are you planning to reach them?

Living Intentionally

in Living Intentionally

Extravagant GraceA few years ago I read Anne Ortlund’s Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman. In it she has a chapter on planning goals and living intentionally that really spurred me on to write my own goals on how I want to grow and what I want to be in life.

I’ve found sitting down and writing out my goals has really helped me to be intentional about what I want to learn and grow in as well be able to articulate to myself and others what’s important to me.

Ortlund defines two different categories for priorities and goals: life purposes and life goals.

A life purpose is what I hope to be.

A life goal is what I hope to do.

The life purpose is a personal mission statement for your life, while life goals are smaller steps that will help you in fulfilling and achieving your life purposes.

Under life purposes and goals are your priorities, which Ortlund outlines for the Christian woman as,

  1. Relationship with God (spiritual growth)
  2. Family (relational and serving)
  3. Community and the world

Over the years I’ve added a few more questions to help me review the last year and move on in the next:

Reviewing Life Purposes & Goals

  1. What do I see myself doing in 5 years? What types of things can I be doing now to get me there?
  2. Review the previous list and evaluate your growth in these goals and purposes.
  3. What am I truly passionate about?
  4. Why am I passionate about these things?
  5. How does what I’m passionate about make me feel? What do I value in it?
  6. What type of things bring me joy?
  7. Can I think of anything I could have more of that would bring me more joy?
  8. When do I feel the happiest or most joyful?
  9. What are the biggest obstacles to happiness and joy in my life?
  10. How do I want to see Jesus in my life?

Yearly Reflection Questions

  1. In what ways have I grown in the last year?
  2. What was my biggest challenge?
  3. How has God revealed himself to me?
  4. How have I come to know God deeper?
  5. What am I thankful for?
  6. How have I been blessed?
  7. Have I grown in encouraging and edifying others?
  8. How have I grown in sharing the gospel?
  9. How have I grown in ministering to those outside the faith?
  10. Have I been hospitable those I’ve come in contact with? Both in and outside of the faith?

Casting Vision for the New Year

Reflect on the last year. Consider your growth, experiences, and lessons learned. Ask the Lord what areas he’d like you to grow in or step out in faith. (An example would be to pursue personal growth, nurture meaningful relationships, and reach out to your community.)

Once God has revealed these focuses, come up with two or three  questions to answer each month so that you can consistently evaluate your growth (or lack of) and identify any areas that you’re not pursuing.

It looks like a lot of questions to go through, but–for me–I feel its worth it. I hate looking back on a year, or even a few months, and not being able to see what God has taught me or how I have grown. How am I supposed to be ready to give a testimony if I can’t recall (quickly) to myself God’s provision, blessing, and correction?

I find that these not only help to give me vision for the coming year, help me to understand and know myself better, but also encourage me to walk deeper and fuller with the Lord.

This week I’m joining in at Extravagant Grace to focus on living intentionally together in 2010. My goal is to take some time over the next week to evaluate my life purposes, goals, and priorities, how I’ve grown in them, and what the Lord has for me in the next year.

Pray for me that I’ll have the discipline to sit down and review these…distractions come so easily. I want to live for what is eternal, not distracting.

When there’s time, I’ll share as I go.

30 Before 30

by Jessica on December 15, 2009

in Uncategorized

*I’d like to make an amendment. Jenny pointed out to me that I do not have 4 1/2 years to do this, but 3 years and 9 months. Not only am I getting older, but apparently my math skills have already gone out the window.

Apparently if you’ve yet to reach 30 this list is a must do. I had never heard about it until my friend April wrote about it. It seems like a good idea. A good way to put on paper some of those things that I want to do, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I have 3 years and 9 months 4 1/2 years before I’m 30…that seems a reasonable amount of time for my list. I’m a little shy to share this, because some of the goals are not known beyond my immediate family. So a bit nervous to expose myself to others.

But we’re being real, right?

Just don’t laugh…please.

30 Before 30

  1. Finish a novel

  2. Make my own healthy recipes (for the sweet tooth)

  3. Finish a screenplay

  4. Visit New York City

  5. Dye my hair

  6. Relearn Spanish

  7. Run a half-marathon

  8. NAMC Preschool/Kindergarten diploma

  9. Grow a vegetable garden

  10. Learn to ride a horse

  11. Make my own pasta and pasta sauce

  12. Complete Marine Corps Mud Run

  13. Have another baby

  14. Pull an all-nighter

  15. Learn to dance

  16. See Josh Groban in concert

  17. Complete a mini-triathlon

  18. Write everyday for 30 days

  19. Watch AFI’s Top 100 movies

  20. Plan the Perfect Wardrobe (seasonal & coordinated)…coupled with finding my signature style (right now, I think it’s a bit American Classic & a whole lot of boring…)

  21. Get to my ideal weight, which-supposedly-is anywhere between 114 – 145lb. I’m about 15lb. from that.

  22. Read the Bible chronologically

  23. Have an organized and simplified home

  24. Live stress-free…or at least have come a long way

  25. On my way to becoming an expert in something….(it only takes 10,000 hours or 10 years)

  26. Write a will

  27. Go to the biggest yard sale in the US

  28. Get to Europe…can we say Jane Austen?

  29. Be confident in myself.

What’s on your list? And, do you have any suggestions for my 30th item?

By the way, if you’ve already pasted 30 there’s still 40 before 40 or 50 before 50…or even 100 before 100. There’s something for everyone!
