9781600067150Just with the title, Trusting in His Goodness: A Woman’s Guide to Knowing God’s Purpose, had the potential to be a book I would love. The trusting in the goodness of God is a subject dear to my heart. Their is little in this life that we can experience and survive without the goodness of God. I’ve always known God was (and continues to be) good, but it wasn’t until my husband and I experienced the pain and loss of a miscarriage that that truth became something I cherished and clinged to.   God is good, all the time.

I was eager to read Trusting in His Goodness by Mimi Wilson and Shelly Volkhardt, but as I got into the first few chapters I was a bit disappointed.  While I find hearing the experiences of others useful in relating truth, it felt there were so many stories being told that it distracted from the point the authors were trying to make. There was a lot of truth mixed with emotion, but when the emotion falls away do we know and believe enough of the Truth to hold us up?

Throughout the first half of the book, I found myself thinking How does this relate to God’s goodness? There were chapters that didn’t really address why God is good, which is what I expected and would benefit a struggling believer or seeker. There were also a lot of tangents without a consistent, whole vision of God’s goodness.

With that being said, I’d wholeheartedly suggest chapters 8-10. For me, those chapters could have been the entire book. That’s where the authors really hit on God’s goodness as well as the why and how we should trust him. That seemed to hit the point of the title. It would have been better if they started and ended the book with those chapters. It would have been a much shorter book, but straight to the point.
