Things I Love

So far I’ve celebrate the “month of love” with some things I love: family, books/chapstick/pretty things, and paper/feet/food. A bit random, but hopefully interesting. Onto the finale of Things I Love….

#1 – Chocolate.

Particularly with peanut butter. Whoever first mixed peanut butter with chocolate was a genius.  Second best combo is mint.

#2 – Biblical Womanhood.

John Piper says it better,

It is not wimpy to say that God created the universe and governs all things to magnify his own grace in the death of his Son for the salvation of his bride. That’s not wimpy. And it doesn’t lead to wimpy womanhood.

But it does lead to womanhood. True womanhood. In fact, it leads to the mind-boggling truth that womanhood and manhood—masculinity and femininity—belong at the center of God’s ultimate purpose. Womanhood and manhood were not an afterthought or a peripheral thought in God’s plan. God designed them precisely so that they would serve to display the glory of his Son dying to have his happy, admiring bride. (see here)

#3 – Montessori.

You know Montessori, right? Maybe not. She’s that Italian lady who did something with education. Now in all serious the Montessori is my preferred philosophy of education. What is it? It’s a method of education that educates the whole child.

Montessori’s approach to the education of the child is unique in that it is based on the observation of  the child and following his or her abilities and interests. By observing children closely, you are able to identify when a child is most willing and ready to learn a specific skill. The method is based on the freedom of the child to explore and learn, mostly, through self-direction.

The Montessori philosophy nurtures a child’s sensitive period by allowing the child ample opportunity  to be absorbed and focused on whatever task they are driven to at the time. Montessori believed that children learned more quickly and easily during this time, for this specific task, than any other time and that children should not be punished or redirected during their sensitive period. (see here)

For those of you who may not know, I taught as an assistant teacher in a Montessori preschool (3 to 6 yr old) for three years before I had my son. In the fall, I finished my Montessori Infant/Toddler training and am a certified Infant/Toddler Montessori teacher through the North American Montessori Center.

Things I Love #3 – Paper, Feet, & Food

#1 – Scrapbooking.

IMGP0221

I’ve been doing it since I was 12. I love it. I even started a blog about it once upon a time (see here).

#2 – Feet.

IMG_8097

Well, at least pictures of feet. To be specific, my feet. And baby feet. Strange, I know. It started when I borrowed a friend’s camera for a mission trip to Belize. I took pictures of my feet in the jungle, on the beach, on Mayan ruins, etc. I left them for her when I returned the camera. It became our little joke. So then, taking pictures of my feet just became a thing I do. I even have a scrapbook of feet pictures.

#3 – Baking.

IMG_6515

I love to bake from scratch. It’s frugal, fun, and relaxing. My love for baking is also probably the reason the baby weight is coming off so slowly even with regular exercise. Oh, well. I love to make muffins, cookies, cakes (Mmmm…red velvet), and bread. But I cheat with the bread. That magic happens in the bread machine.

Alright, so open up…what’s a few of your favorite things?

Last week I kicked off the month of love sharing the things closest that I love. This week I’m getting a little frivolous and adding pictures. Oh, pictures how I love thee!

#1 – Books.

Things I Love

If you know me, you know I love books. Always have, always will. I was the kid who got the flashlight taken away for reading in bed after lights out and then I’d go sit by the window to read by the moonlight. My mom was asked once for ideas to get a teenager gifts for Christmas (this was when I was in high school) and she told them all I wanted was books.

You’ll find books in various places and piles throughout our house. This isn’t even the lot of them. I have books at my parent’s and grandparent’s house. Where’d our collection come from? Thrift stores, gifts, PaperBack Swap, school, and library sales. Joe was a history major (and now in seminary) and I was an English/Education major. Books are a requirement.

I even had a book blog for awhile. The name? Mountains of Books. You know, from Beauty and the Beast. It’s from the description of the castle library, “Mountains of books, gads of books, cascades of books–more books than you can read in a lifetime!”

#2 – Chapstick.

It’s always with me. Always. If it’s not then I’m frantically looking for it and going through withdrawals. I think my dependency started sometime in high school.

These days I’m rocking the Burt’s Bees, but traditionally I’m a Chapstick kind of gal with a bit of Mary Kay Satin Lips for good measure.

#3 – Brooches

Things I Love1

Or pins, if that’s what you prefer to call them. I love vintage things. Simple, beautiful…an understated elegance. I don’t wear them as often as I use to, but I still collect them.

#4 – Pearls.

IMG_7995

I love pearls. They’re beautiful. And I wear them almost daily. I have a pair of fresh water pearl studs I wear that my dad got on a trip to Australia, a fake pearl necklace (who wants the real thing broken amid hugs and snuggles), and a real pearl necklace (see picture) that Joe gave me as a wedding present.

#5 – Old books.

Things I Love2

They’re beautiful, alluring. Why? There’s something about the yellowed pages, tiny type, and vignettes. I collect them. So if you have any old books you want to get rid of go ahead and pass them my way. :) Oh, and the ultimate find would be anything Jane Austen.

Alright, so what about your favorite things?
